Game Night is a classic dinner party theme that allows couples to get together and have a good time without putting too much stress on the host. But what games are worth everyone’s time? Are you bored with charades, and Pictionary? Then let’s look at some new games that will enhance the party. You’ve played Cards Against Humanity and that’s fun but feeling a bit tired and your friends feel you’ve busted out the Rock Band a few too many times. Here’s 5 to try the next time you have your friends over:
1. A Game You Play With Your Phone: JackBox
(https://jackboxgames.com/games/)
Jackbox is a series of games where you buy a game pack (5 games per pack, though you can also purchase each game individually) of games for you and guests to play along with on your phone. You’ll receive a code and each person goes to jackbox.tv on their phone to enter the code and then joins to play along.
Each game is different but hilarity and enjoyment are the main focus. Find out who’s the best liar, who can mimic a ghost’s handwriting. Have three of your group assigned to be aliens and everyone must go through funny challenges to prove they’re human. No matter when it is, this game guarantees laughter and enjoyment.
2. A Board Game: Takenodo
This absolutely beautiful game combines strategy, resourcefulness and a panda. What’s there to complain about? Follow along with the cards that push you to complete challenges like collecting a certain number of bamboo, having the panda eat certain numbers and colours of bamboo and forming geometric patterns as you compete to lay down the coloured tiles. This game will appeal to anyone who likes board games and is ready for something a little more out-of-the-ordinary than Monopoly.
3. A Card Game: Coup
If you’ve ever wanted to take the opportunity to accuse your friends of being dirty liars and horrible cheaters this is definitely the game for you. In Coup, you get 2 cards and some tokens. Your job is to stay alive longer than anyone else. Collect tokens (which you can use to ‘coup’ someone and eliminate them) and accuse your friends of lying and cheating by playing cards they don’t have – while you do the same!
4. An Old School Game: Celebrity
One of my all-time favourite party games because it can get so varied is Celebrity. Everyone writes down celebrity names on pieces of paper and throws them in a hat/bowl/Ming Dynasty Vase. Divide into teams. When you’re up, draw names and get your team to guess the celebrity’s name by saying anything except their name. Show off your knowledge of obscure 15th century sculptures and baffle everyone in the room by creating a gesture that secretly means “Yehudi Menuhin”. Earn one point for correctly naming the celebrity and name as many as you can in a 1 minute time limit. The team with the most points wins.
5. A Video Game: Coffin Dodgers
Drive away from Death as he comes for you! Race your friends as a group of wily determined senior citizens who are riding their scooters away from the Grim Reaper. Use weapons (like shovels, canes, crowbars and golf clubs) to beat off the zombies who have come to assist dragging you six feet under. You can even pimp your scooter! Loser dies, winner sees the next round. Dodge crazy obstacles and laugh like a maniac. Up to 4 players can race and try to dodge burial time!
There are always more games for you to try. Don’t settle for the same old same old – keep spicing up game night with new additions!
